Name: Barbary Macaque (Macaca sylvanus)
Location: Algeria and Morocco
Statistics: Body length: 38-76cm, Tail length: vestigial, Weight: 5-13kg.
Diet: Leaves, roots, sprouts, fruit and invertebrates
Conservation Status: Vulnerable
Interesting Facts: Despite their name, Barbary Ape, they are actually true monkeys, and not apes • After a pregnancy period of 196 days, females give birth to one young, which weighs about 450g at birth • Barbary macaques live in multi-male, multi-female groups with female hierarchies • They have a life span of around 22 years, yet Monkey Forest currently holds a female at the age of 29 years.
